Most insurance companies in the USA pay for bariatric surgery (weight loss or bariatric surgery). But the approval process is a lengthy process and not all of them qualify because of it. The patient needs to establish a medical necessity. Here are the points they consider:
o Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher and morbid obesity. BMI is a number calculated from a person’s weight and height and used as an indicator of body adiposity to classify obesity.
o Proving that obesity is a problem that has persisted for more than five years.
o We have made all serious efforts to reduce weight by non-surgical methods (pills, exercises, diet, creams and positioning, special clothing, etc.).
o You have comorbidities (medical illnesses/diseases that are caused by or contribute to morbid obesity. eg, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, arthritis)
